We make a typing site for children, so treat what follows accordingly — and then check the sources, which is why they are all linked. The short answer is that typing does not make a child cleverer, and the research does not claim it does. What it does is remove an obstacle between a child and what they want to say, and there is decent evidence for that specific and much smaller claim.
The thing that actually matters is called transcription
When a child writes, two things happen at once. They decide what to say, and they get it onto the page. The second one — spelling the words, forming the letters, finding the keys — is transcription, and for a young child it is enormously demanding. Every scrap of attention spent hunting for the letter K is attention not spent on the sentence.
This is not a theory about computers; it is the central finding of the writing-development literature. A meta-analytic review pooling the studies found that transcription fluency is consistently related to the quality of what children write, whether that transcription happens with a pen or a keyboard3. Fluency is not the point of writing. It is the thing that has to get out of the way before the point of writing can happen.
Fluency does not make a child a better writer. It stops slowness from making them a worse one.
Which is why giving a child a keyboard, on its own, makes their writing worse
This is the finding we would most like not to be true, and it is the best-evidenced one here. When researchers gave 300 primary school children the same composition task by hand and on a keyboard, the typed pieces were rated about two school years behind the handwritten ones by the same children. Most 9–11 year-olds were still faster with a pen than with a keyboard1.
Nothing had gone wrong with their ideas. The keyboard was simply a worse tool in their hands than the pencil was, because nobody had taught them to use it. A child who hunts for each letter is spending on transcription exactly the attention the meta-analysis says has to be free.
The authors' conclusion is the practical one: explicit touch-typing instruction is what unlocks the word processor for a child's writing. Without it, handing a child a laptop is not an upgrade.
And why teaching typing properly changes the writing itself
The other half of that argument has been tested directly. In a study of secondary students, how fluently a student could type predicted the length and quality of the text they produced — and when students who typed poorly were taught to type, their writing improved2.
That is an unusually clean result for education research: not a correlation left hanging, but an intervention that moved the outcome. It is also a narrow one. It says that fluency was the bottleneck for those students. It does not say typing is a general-purpose brain improver, and no one should read it that way.
What about the brain-scan studies?
You have probably seen the headline: writing by hand lights up the brain, typing does not. It comes from a real study. Researchers recorded high-density EEG from 36 university students writing words with a digital pen and typing the same words, and found widespread theta–alpha connectivity across parietal and central regions during handwriting that was absent during typing4.
It is worth knowing what that study did not do. A commentary published in the same journal points out that it measured neither learning nor memory, used an unusual typing arrangement, showed participants different things on screen in the two conditions, and did not control for how well any participant could type5.
So the honest reading is: handwriting and typing are different motor and perceptual acts, and the brain does different things during them. Whether the difference in connectivity means a difference in learning is a further question that this study did not ask. “More connectivity” is not a synonym for “better”.
A brain scan can show two activities differ. It cannot, by itself, show which one taught the child more.
The note-taking study everyone quotes, and the replication nobody does
The most-cited claim in this whole area is that students who take lecture notes by hand understand more than students typing on laptops, because typists transcribe verbatim while writers have to summarise6. It is a genuinely interesting idea and it was published in a serious journal.
A direct replication using the original materials failed to reproduce it. Test performance did not reliably differ between longhand and laptop, and a small meta-analysis across similar studies found only small, non-significant effects favouring longhand7.
This matters for a parent because that original finding is the source of a great deal of confident advice about children and keyboards. The finding is contested. Advice built on it should be held loosely — including advice pointing the other way.
So what should a parent actually do?
Read the evidence above and the honest summary is narrow, and we think still worth acting on:
- Do not drop handwriting. Nothing here says a keyboard replaces a pencil, and for young children learning letters there are reasons to think the hand matters.
- Do not hand a child a keyboard and expect better work. Until typing is fluent it is the worse tool, measurably.
- If a child is going to type — and at some point every child is — teach it properly rather than letting two-finger hunting set. The one intervention study here found that teaching it changed the writing.
- Judge it by whether they stop looking at their hands, not by words per minute. Fluency means attention is free, and that is the whole mechanism.
- Be sceptical of anyone, including us, who tells you typing makes children smarter. The research does not support it.
The reason our lessons are whole sentences rather than key drills is this argument, followed to its conclusion: the goal is not fast fingers, it is fingers that have stopped being in the way. That is a modest aim. It is also, as far as the evidence goes, the real one.
