This is the first rung. A child who has never touched a keyboard starts here, with single keys and the home row, moves on to whole words, and finishes with sentences short enough to read in one breath.

What it builds: where the eight home keys are, which finger owns which key, and the habit of looking at the words instead of the hands.

Move on when a lesson finishes without looking down — not when it finishes fast.
